Black Mountain Ruin

GPS planning file and map.

The Black Mountain Ruin near Globe, Arizona is one of those redoubt type ruins that are built on hilltops, mountain tops, or buttes. There are 2 other ruins, Griffin and Jackson Buttes, of a similar nature in the same area. To get there, drive east from Globe on US 60E for 18.2 miles and turn left onto Haystack Butte Road, FR 303. Follow that for 4.5 miles and turn left onto FR 645, go 1.7 miles and bear right for the final 0.2 miles to the trailhead. It should then be about 3 tenths of a mile hiking to get to the top of the butte. For turn-by-turn directions enter the coordinates for the trailhead ‘33.65752, -110.68387’ into your driving app.

Included with this post is the GPS file and map that we plan to use for our first visit. If you don't want to wait for us to get around to it feel free to try the GPS file and map for yourself. With no guarantee, of course, but they most often prove valuable for us.

Sycamore Spring Ruin

GPS planning file and map.

The Sycamore Spring Ruin is located northwest of Globe, Arizona. To get there drive north from Globe on US 60W/AZ-188 to 225 Road and turn left. Follow 225 for 8.3 miles and park. It should be just over a quarter mile to the trailhead. The route that our GPS track follows is one traced from a scanned topo and Forest Service map. The actual route might vary a little. In Google Earth there is a visible trail along the base of the hill from FR 225 to the ruins. For turn-by-turn directions to the trailhead enter '33.42942, -110.91302' into your driving app.

The Pinal Ruin is located along a bend of the Salt River just upstream from where it flows into Roosevelt Lake north of Globe, Arizona. There doesn’t seem to be an official trail leading to the ruins but it seems possible to hike along or near the bank of the Salt River to get to them. For turn-by-turn directions to a pullout near the bridge over the Salt River enter ‘33.61880, -110.92265’ into your driving app. These look like substantial ruins on Google Earth.

To get there, drive up the Cherry Creek Road for 25 miles and turn right onto FR 203. From there it is 15.75 miles to the trailhead. It looks like a 4WD vehicle might be required. From that point it should be about a quarter mile hike to the ruins. It is hard to tell from Google Earth what you will find. Entering the trailhead coordinates ‘33.84465, -110.74273’ into your driving app will get you most of the way to the trailhead but the entire road seems to be unknown to the software.

It should be about 2.7 miles from the trailhead to the ruins. A faint trail can be seen leaving the trailhead but it disappears before crossing Cherry Creek. On the other side of Cherry Creek it is easy to see the trail once again heading up the ridge.

Included with this post is the GPS file and map that we plan to use for our first visit. If you don't want to wait for us to get around to it feel free to try the GPS file and map for yourself. With no guarantee, of course, but they most often prove valuable for us.

Clines Terrace Ruins

GPS planning file and map.

The Cline Terrace and Indian Point Ruins are located at the northeast end of Theodore Roosevelt Lake near Roosevelt, Arizona. The Cline Terrace Ruins look like they might be partially submerged when the water level of the lake is at its highest. All the ruins are visible on Google Earth. For turn-by-turn directions you can enter ‘Indian Point Campground Tonto National Forest’ into your driving app. If coming from the south it will have you turn off of AZ-188 onto A-Cross Road and take that to Indian Point Road. GPS planning file and map.

Ruin Mountain is south of Williams, Arizona in the Kaibab National Forest. Zooming in on Google Earth it’s hard to tell just for sure what is there in the way of ruins.
