Mound Mountain (6,266 feet) is the highest point in the Superstition Mountains. About 250 feet lower in elevation is a hill with a 130 ft. diameter stone circle that some find similarities to with Stonehenge. One route for getting there that we have discovered is 8 miles one-way with an elevation gain of about 2,740 feet. This route begins at the Campaign Trail #256 (Northern Terminus) trailhead.
To get there turn off of AZ-188 onto the J Bar Road, 2 miles north of Roosevelt, and follow it for 7.2 miles to the trailhead. Begin hiking the Campaign Trail #256 for 5.4 miles and go right onto the Fire Line Trail #118. After another 1.8 miles take the trail to the left that after 0.8 miles leads to the stone circle. (Someone has labeled it on the map as Circlestone.)
Included with this post is the GPS file and map that we plan to use for our first visit. If you don't want to wait for us to get around to it feel free to try the GPS file and map for yourself. With no guarantee, of course, but they most often prove valuable for us.
