Tramway/Maxwell Petroglyphs

GPS planning file and map.

The Tramway/Maxwell Loop Petroglyphs are found along West Clear Creek in the Coconino National Forest about 26 miles, as the crow flies, west of Camp Verde, Arizona. To get there, take I-17 Exit 287 and head east on AZ-260 for 34 miles. Turn left onto AZ-87 for 12 miles and turn left onto Lake Mary Road. Follow the Lake Mary Road for 7.3 miles and turn left onto FR-81. After 3.1 miles go left onto FR-81E. In another 3.7 miles the road comes to a fork. The left fork is for the Maxwell Trail and the right is for the Tramway Trail. If hiking the loop park here. If all you want to do is find the petroglyphs you could continue driving down the Tramway side of the loop for another 1.6 miles or so where you should only have to hike about 1 mile one-way. The petroglyphs are under an overhang in the cliff. The GPS waypoint that we are giving is the approximate location. Note that the elevation drops a little over 1,000 feet into the canyon.

Included with this post is the GPS file and map that we plan to use for our first visit. If you don't want to wait for us to get around to it feel free to try the GPS file and map for yourself. With no guarantee, of course, but they most often prove valuable for us.
