Black Mountain Ruin

The Black Mountain Ruin near Globe, Arizona is one of those redoubt type ruins that are built on hilltops, mountain tops, or buttes. There are 2 other ruins, Griffin and Jackson Buttes, of a similar nature in the same area. To get there, drive east from Globe on US 60E for 18.2 miles and turn left onto Haystack Butte Road, FR 303. Follow that for 4.5 miles and turn left onto FR 645, go 1.7 miles and bear right for the final 0.2 miles to the trailhead. It should then be about 3 tenths of a mile hiking to get to the top of the butte. For turn-by-turn directions enter the coordinates for the trailhead ‘33.65752, -110.68387’ into your driving app.

Togetzoge Ruin

The Togetzoge Ruin is located along US 60 about 12 miles west of Globe, Arizona. The ruins are within 500 feet of the highway. To get there you can enter the coordinates for the turnoff ‘33.36719, -110.93986’ into your driving app for turn-by-turn directions.

Sycamore Spring Ruin

The Sycamore Spring Ruin is located northwest of Globe, Arizona. To get there drive north from Globe on US 60W/AZ-188 to 225 Road and turn left. Follow 225 for 8.3 miles and park. It should be just over a quarter mile to the trailhead. The route that our GPS track follows is one traced from a scanned topo and Forest Service map. The actual route might vary a little. In Google Earth there is a visible trail along the base of the hill from FR 225 to the ruins. For turn-by-turn directions to the trailhead enter '33.42942, -110.91302' into your driving app.

Q Ranch Pueblo

The Q Ranch Pueblo is located about 85 miles north of Globe and 22 miles east of Young, Arizona. There is quite a bit of information about it on the Q Ranch Pueblo website. For turn-by-turn directions you can enter ‘Q Ranch Pueblo Young, AZ’ into your driving app. Basically you will drive past Young for 11.3 miles and turn right onto FR 102 and follow that for 8.25 miles to Q Ranch. This extensive pueblo is well worth visiting.

Pueblo Canyon Ruins

Pueblo Canyon is located in the Cherry Creek drainage north of Globe, Arizona. Along the trail through the canyon are found 4 ruins. To get there, drive north on the Cherry Creek road from AZ-288, near Lake Roosevelt, for 23 miles, or south from the upper end of the Cherry Creek Road for 17.2 miles and turn onto FR 3214 where you should be able to drive another 0.7 miles before you begin hiking. The trail shows up on maps and appears to be an official route. For turn-by-turn directions enter the coordinates for the turnoff ‘33.83872, -110.86731’ into your driving app.

Pinal Ruin

The Pinal Ruin is located along a bend of the Salt River just upstream from where it flows into Roosevelt Lake north of Globe, Arizona. There doesn’t seem to be an official trail leading to the ruins but it seems possible to hike along or near the bank of the Salt River to get to them. For turn-by-turn directions to a pullout near the bridge over the Salt River enter ‘33.61880, -110.92265’ into your driving app. These look like substantial ruins on Google Earth.

Mustang Ridge Ruin

The Mustang Ridge Ruin is located in a remote area of the Fort Apache Indian Reservation between Globe and Snowflake, Arizona. Access is via the Cherry Creek Road. To get there, drive up the Cherry Creek Road for 25 miles and turn right onto FR 203. From there it is 15.75 miles to the trailhead. It looks like a 4WD vehicle might be required. From that point it should be about a quarter mile hike to the ruins. It is hard to tell from Google Earth what you will find. Entering the trailhead coordinates ‘33.84465, -110.74273’ into your driving app will get you most of the way to the trailhead but the entire road seems to be unknown to the software.

Mule Hoof Ruins

The Mule Hoof Ruins are located in the Tonto National Forest off of US 60/AZ-77 northeast of Globe, Arizona. It is hard to see any ruins on Google Earth but it is a short hike to find out. For turn-by-turn directions enter the trailhead coordinates ‘33.79827, -110.54213’ into your driving app. It should have you turn off of US 60 onto Philips Mine Road toward the Seneca Lake Recreation Area. Continue for 4 miles and turn right for less than a mile or so to where we marked a suitable looking trailhead. From there it is a half mile hike to where the ruins are supposed to be. It should be about 2.7 miles from the trailhead to the ruins.

Lost Canyon Ruin

The Lost Canyon Ruin is located in the Tonto National Forest near Globe, Arizona. To get there, drive east on AZ-288 from its junction with AZ-188 for 14.8 miles and turn right. Continue for 3.25 miles and park. The ruins should be about a half mile away. For turn-by-turn directions to the turnoff enter ‘33.73226, -110.95522’ into your driving app. Entering the trailhead coordinates doesn’t quite work. It should be about 2.7 miles from the trailhead to the ruins. A faint trail can be seen leaving the trailhead but it disappears before crossing Cherry Creek. On the other side of Cherry Creek it is easy to see the trail once again heading up the ridge.

Copper Forks Ruin

The Copper Forks Ruin is located in the Tonto National Forest along the Cherry Creek Road north of Globe, Arizona. The ruins look worth visiting when viewed on Google Earth. To get there, turn off of AZ-288 onto the Cherry Creek Road and drive 23.8 miles to the turnoff that leads to the trailhead. If you drive up AZ-288 to where the Cherry Creek Road reconnects and turn down it then it is 16.3 miles to the turnoff. From the turnoff it is less than 1,500 feet to where you can park and begin hiking. For turn-by-turn directions enter the GPS coordinates of the turnoff (33.84549, -110.87310) into your driving app. It should be about 2.7 miles from the trailhead to the ruins. A faint trail can be seen leaving the trailhead but it disappears before crossing Cherry Creek. On the other side of Cherry Creek it is easy to see the trail once again heading up the ridge.

Clines Terrace Ruins

The Cline Terrace and Indian Point Ruins are located at the northeast end of Theodore Roosevelt Lake near Roosevelt, Arizona. The Cline Terrace Ruins look like they might be partially submerged when the water level of the lake is at its highest. All the ruins are visible on Google Earth. For turn-by-turn directions you can enter ‘Indian Point Campground Tonto National Forest’ into your driving app. If coming from the south it will have you turn off of AZ-188 onto A-Cross Road and take that to Indian Point Road. Our map and GPS file turn off of AZ-188 onto Bar X Crossing and take that to Cline Road and then to Indian Point Road so whatever works.

Chalk Creek Ruin

The Chalk Creek Ruin is located in the Tonto National Forest, just off of the Cherry Creek Road, north of Globe, Arizona. The Devil’s Chasm Ruin is in the Sierra Ancha Wilderness Area north of Globe, Arizona. To get there, drive north from Globe on AZ-188 toward Theodore Roosevelt Lake and turn right onto AZ-288. In 6.9 miles turn right onto Cherry Creek, FR 203. Continue for 11.5 miles and turn right onto FR 1075. The ruins should be within a hundred feet or so.

Devil’s Chasm Ruin

The Devil’s Chasm Ruin is in the Sierra Ancha Wilderness Area north of Globe, Arizona. To get there, drive north from Globe on AZ-188 toward Theodore Roosevelt Lake and turn right onto AZ-288. In 6.9 miles turn right onto Cherry Creek and proceed 21.5 miles to the trailhead. The hike up the Devil’s Chasm trail is only about 1.5 miles but it requires several slickrock scrambles where ropes might be in place as an aid.

Besh-Ba-Gowah Museum Pueblo

Hieroglyphic Point

The Hieroglyphic Point Petroglyphs is a site near Globe, Arizona that we haven't visited yet. The petroglyphs are located on a boulder at the Salt River Canyon Rest Stop about 39.5 miles from Globe on US-60 between mile markers 290 and 291. For turn-by-turn directions you can enter 'Salt River Canyon Rest Stop' into your driving app and pick the one that says San Carlos, AZ.
