Pluto's Cave is located in the Klamath National Forest near Weed, California. The cave, formed by a lava tube, was used as a rock shelter by migrating Native People. Spectacular views of Mt. Shasta occur along the trail making for a very pleasant experience.
For turn-by-turn directions to the trailhead enter 41.57075, -122.27911 into your driving app. You will be directed northeast from Weed on US-97 for about 11.5 miles to where you will turn left onto A12, the 99-97 Cutoff Road. In another 3.3 miles turn left again and continue for 0.22 miles to the parking area. From there it is 3 tenths of a mile to the cave.
Several skylight windows light up the entrance of the cave. If you plan to explore deeper be sure to bring a flashlight. (From what we read, the trail that loops back to the trailhead is a little hard to follow in places.)
Included with this post is the GPS file and map that we plan to use for our first visit. If you don't want to wait for us to get around to it feel free to try the GPS file and map for yourself. With no guarantee, of course, but they most often prove valuable for us.
