Canebrake Pictographs

GPS planning file and map.

The Canebrake Pictographs are located about 4.6 miles northeast of Canebrake, California. The site consists of a single boulder with a few faint pictographs at the lower site and a cluster of boulders with pictographs at the upper site. A few mortars are also present.

For turn-by-turn directions enter 35.76584, -118.07918 into your driving app. From Canebrake drive northeast on the Chimney Peak Road for about 4.6 miles and park out of the way on the side road on your right. From there cross the highway and scramble across the wash and then up the side of the hill on the obvious trail.

For photos and a good description for this site and about 70 others in the Owens Valley you can download Bill Petry's book Rock Art of the Owens Valley or, if you can find one, purchase a copy from eBay.

Included with this post is the GPS file and map that we plan to use for our first visit. If you don't want to wait for us to get around to it feel free to try the GPS file and map for yourself. With no guarantee, of course, but they most often prove valuable for us.
