The Chimney Meadow Pictographs are located in the Owens Peak Wilderness Area between Canebrake and Pearsonville, California. The site consists of some geometric design pictographs that are tucked away beneath an overhang.
For turn-by-turn directions enter 35.86137, -118.00848 into your driving app. The shortest route is up the 9 Mile Canyon Road from Pearsonville with a distance of 10 miles from where you turnoff of US-395. Once you get there I think they reclaimed the first part of the 4WD road so you have to turnoff into the trees right before you reach it. From there you have to find your way through the trees to the old road and then continue hiking the 1 mile distance to the site. It was confusing enough the time that we were there that seeing we couldn't make it before dark we gave it up until another time.
For photos and a good description for this site and about 70 others in the Owens Valley you can download Bill Petry's book Rock Art of the Owens Valley or, if you can find one, purchase a copy from eBay.
Included with this post is the GPS file and map that we plan to use for our first visit. If you don't want to wait for us to get around to it feel free to try the GPS file and map for yourself. With no guarantee, of course, but they most often prove valuable for us.
