The Goat Camp Petroglyphs are located in the White Tank Mountain Regional Park near Phoenix, Arizona. The petroglyphs include a sun symbol and several water signs that are found on the top of a single boulder.
From Waddell head west on W Olive Avenue for 2.95 miles. At that point W Olive becomes W White Tank Mountain Road. Continue for just under a half mile and turn left onto North Black Canyon where the trailhead will be on your right in about 300 feet. For turn-by-turn directions to the trailhead enter 33.56866, -112.50542 into your driving app.
The hard packed trail, although uneven in places, is easy to hike.
From the trailhead follow the Goat Camp trail for 0.65 miles. At this point on the left there will be a plaque on a bench with the name of Gus Burnweit.
From the bench look directly across the wash where there is a large square, dark colored, boulder.
The petroglyphs are on the top of the large boulder. To see them better you might want to stand on top of the bench.
It isn't much easier to see the petroglyphs if you cross the wash without climbing onto the boulder itself which is strongly discouraged.
We did notice at least one shard of pottery in the area of the boulder. Be sure to leave anything that you notice where you find it for others to enjoy remembering at the same time that it is illegal to remove artifacts.
There isn't a lot to see as far as petroglyphs go at this site but the trail is rather scenic and it is an easy hike that doesn't take much time. We are told that there are more petroglyphs further up the trail but we only went another half mile or so looking. (That was mostly because the GPS coordinates that we had for the petroglyphs was way off the mark.) The trail host that we spoke with didn't even know of the ones that we have pointed out here yet alone any others. If you would like to see them for yourself then all you have to do is 'Take a hike'.
