Circle Cross is a minor petroglyph site along the Chalk Bluff Road in Bishop, California where a few petroglyphs can be found on several boulders. On one of the boulders is a circle that is divided by two lines forming a cross for which the site gets its name.
To get to the trailhead from Bishop you can enter 'Happy Boulders' into your driving app or simply drive north from Bishop on US-6 and turn left onto the 5 Bridges Road. After 1.8 miles merge left onto the Jean Blanc Road. In another 0.6 miles turn left onto the Chalk Bluff Road and follow that for 2 miles to where the boulders will be about 120 feet from the road. Either park out of the way along the road or keep going for about a quarter mile to the Happy Boulders trailhead and walk back.
The black boulder on the right is the Circle Cross boulder. The larger, light colored, boulder on the left has a few other petroglyphs and the even larger boulder in the middle has some faint red pictographs.
The large boulder on the left has a few images on two of its sides.
These include an easy to see pair of concentric circles.
At the top of the other side is an anthropomorphic image that is partially blurred out.
About 65 feet or so to the east is the Circle Cross boulder.
The hard to see image faces upwards.
There is another large light colored boulder that you might notice that has a few lines of red pictographs that don't resemble much of anything.
There's not a lot to see at the Circle Cross site but since it is mentioned elsewhere we thought we would share a little more about it. If you would like to see it for yourself then all you have to do is 'Take a hike'.
