Carrizo Canyon is located southeast of Bloomfield, New Mexico in the Dinetah Area. This post is for the first of three petroglyph sites that we have identified within close proximity of each other that are in Carrizo Canyon. This site includes a Basketmaker style panel and several others. There is also an image in the same area depicting a crucifix.
For turn-by-turn directions to the site enter 36.64384, -107.58988 into your driving app. From US-64 you will first turn onto CR 4450 and then onto CR 492 the Carrizo Road. From US-64 it is about 15.2 miles to where the petroglyphs will be on the left.
There are more than 2 dozen of the Basketmaker images.
The anthropomorphic Basketmaker figures come in all sizes but the shape doesn't vary much.
Further along the cliff there is a group of panels with several other styles of petroglyphs.
A little further along the cliff is this image of a crucifix which is probably either Navajo or Spanish Colonial.
Several other small panels of images can be found in the same area of the cliff.
Carrizo Canyon Site I has an interesting mix of petroglyphs that are all within an easy reach of the road.
If you would like to see them for yourself then all you have to do is 'Take a hike'.
